COVID-19 vaccine overview

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a highly infectious respiratory infection, first identified in late 2019. It can spread quickly and cause serious illness, hospitalisation and death.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines have been approved for use by the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and vaccinations have now begun. Coronavirus (COVID-19 vaccinations started in the UK on 8 December 2020. Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines are free for everyone in Scotland.

The vaccine will be given in two doses. COVID-19 vaccination offers good protection within two to three weeks of the first dose. The second dose can be given between 3 and 12 weeks after the first dose.
