Eligible groups

In Scotland, flu vaccine is offered to:

  • children aged 6 months to 2 years at higher risk of flu
  • children aged 2 to 5 years (on 1 September 2023 and not yet at school)
  • all primary school children in Scotland (primary 1 to primary 7)
  • all secondary school pupils (S1 to S6)

More information about the flu vaccine information for children is available on NHS inform (external website).

Children and young people who attend school will get the flu vaccine at school.

Children who do not attend school will be invited to get the flu vaccine at either a community clinic, a GP practice or in a nursery setting.

Flu vaccinations start from September.

It is important that anyone who is eligible receives the flu vaccine this year.

Flu viruses are constantly changing and a different vaccine has to be made every year to ensure the best protection against flu. This is why the flu vaccine is offered every year.

Teachers and support staff

Teachers and pupil facing support staff who work within a nursery, primary or secondary school in a local authority or independent setting are eligible to get the free flu vaccine.

Find out more about eligibility for adult flu immunisations on NHS inform (external website).
