Before 2013, the Scottish Perinatal and Infant Mortality and Morbidity Report (SPIMMR) recorded information on:

  • stillbirths
  • late fetal deaths
  • neonatal deaths
  • post-neonatal deaths

It also included congenital anomalies seen in live births, stillbirths, miscarriages and terminations.

From 2013 onwards, Mothers and Babies Reducing Risk through Audit and Confidential Enquiries across the UK (MBRRACE-UK) took over the reporting of late fetal deaths, stillbirths and neonatal deaths.

The four UK departments of health provides funding for this national programme of work.

All units in Scotland are now registered for the web-based data collection process.

The MBRRACE-UK Perinatal Mortality Surveillance reports contain information broken down by the four constituent nations of the UK. Scottish data may also be analysed separately. This will inform the patient safety programme in maternity services.
