Scottish Suicide Information Database (ScotSID)
- Mental health
PHS produces annual figures of deaths by suicide in Scotland. The figures are available on the Scottish Suicide Information Database (ScotSID) on the PHS website.
This report is an analysis of selected information held on the Scottish Suicide Information Database. The purpose of ScotSID, established in 2009, is to:
- provide a central repository for information on all probable suicide deaths in Scotland
- support epidemiology,
- support policy-making and preventive activity
The database covers:
- demographic information
- contact with specified health services
- related health data
In the future, it will provide further details relating to the suicide event and the wider social circumstances of the deceased. This will be by the inclusion of information from other data sources.
ScotSID links the National Records of Scotland (NRS) death records for probable suicides with data sources held by PHS.
The publication uses linked information on:
- prescriptions
- Accident & Emergency attendances
- psychiatric outpatient appointments
- acute and psychiatric hospital stays
- contacts with Unscheduled Care services
- assessments by specialist drug services
