Outpatients

Outpatient attendances in NHSScotland, for quarters ending June 2019 to June 2024^p

There were just over one million (1,017,577) outpatient attendances between 1 April and 30 June 2024 – a 2% increase compared to the same quarter last year, and a 5% decrease compared to the same quarter in 2019 (pre-pandemic). Of these, 31% (319,485 attendances) were new cases. The remaining 69% (698,092 attendances) were patients returning for follow-up appointments. During the same period, 7.3% (25,020) of new outpatient appointments were not kept without prior notification by the patient (‘Did Not Attends’).

Inpatients and day cases

There were 261,247 hospital admissions between 1 April and 30 June 2024 – a 3% increase compared to the same quarter last year, and a 5% decrease compared to the same quarter in 2019 (pre-pandemic). Of these, 46% (120,571) were emergency admissions, 10% (27,030) elective (planned) admissions, and 43% (112,257) day cases.  The average length of stay for inpatients was 7.6 days: 3.3 days for elective inpatients and 8.4 days for emergency inpatients.

Beds

There were on average 13,723 available staffed beds per day for all acute specialties in the quarter ending 30 June 2024 – a 0.4% increase compared to the same quarter last year. Of these, 9,835 (72%) were for medical specialties and 3,888 (28%) were for surgical specialties. For all acute specialties in the quarter ending 30 June 2024, the percentage occupancy was 88.5%, a 1.4 percentage point increase compared to the same quarter last year.

Further information

This release includes the NHS Fife, NHS Golden Jubilee (GJ) and NHS Highland National Treatment Centre (NTC) (external website) locations. As not all NTCs have a unique location code, and may be an expansion of an existing location, it is not currently possible to accurately differentiate between NTC activity and additional activity carried out within an NHS Board. Therefore, NTC figures reported may not be reflective of all NTC activity.

The data for the most recent quarter are provisional. Provisional data are subject to change in future publications, as submissions may be updated to reflect a more accurate and complete set of data from NHS Boards.

The volume of hospital activity and trends observed continue to be impacted post-pandemic and during the recovery phase. For example, inpatient and day case activity and outpatient activity have both reduced by 5% when comparing April to June 2024 to the same quarter of 2019 (pre-pandemic). However, activity levels have generally been recovering from July 2020 onwards, but are still not up to pre-pandemic levels.

Disclosure control methods have been applied to the data to protect patient confidentiality: therefore, some figures on total counts may not be additive.

Please note that there will be methodological changes within the next quarterly publication due to be published in February 2025, which will utilise the outpatient’s data source (SMR00) for both new and return outpatients data. As a result, publications from February 2025 onwards will not be directly comparable to this and previous publications.
