Number of people delayed
The number of people delayed in Scottish hospitals are showing a downward trend since the peak in November 2022 (1,977). At June 2023 census, 1,738 people were delayed, similar to May 2023 census (1,748).
Length of delay at census point
These people on average (median) were delayed by 27 days, an increase of 4 days from May 2023.

Average number of beds occupied per day
The average daily occupied beds are showing a downward trend since the peak in November 2022 (1,950). In June 2023, the average number of beds occupied per day due to delayed discharges was 1,730, less than May 2023 (1,744).
The chart above shows that the trend in the average daily number of beds occupied by people delayed in their discharge is predominantly driven by the trend in standard delays (health and social care and patient, family and carer related) reasons.
Delayed days in hospital
In June 2023, there were 51,905 days spent in hospital by people whose discharge was delayed. This is an increase of 3% compared with the number of delayed days in June 2022 (50,340).
