About this release

This release by Public Health Scotland (PHS) is the second report by the Scottish National Audit Programme (SNAP). This report comments on and provides examples of, how national clinical audit is integral to improving care, pathways and outcomes for patients by measuring and reporting on evidence based standards and implementing the SNAP governance process which requires outlier NHS boards to address the unwarranted variation.

Further information

The SNAP is an improvement programme that enables NHS Boards to make meaningful decisions at a local level whilst also being aware of the national picture. It uses clinical audit data to provide intelligence, highlight variance, share learning, and promote best practice across the pathways of care within the various audits and registries which it manages.

The next release of this publication will be November 2025.
