Abstract

Mental health first aid is a concept which has been developed and proffered as a mechanism to improve resilience for nurses for many years, with varying efficacy (Morgan et al., 2018). The interrelated concepts of personal resilience, burnout, and job turnover are also key focus points for researchers understanding how best to support and develop the nursing workforce. This study considers these crucial components in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which undoubtedly had devastating effects on the well-being of nurses globally (Wang et al., 2024). The long-term effects of which remain, and run the risk of becoming, institutionalised barriers to patient care and workforce retention without robust mechanisms to confront them.
