Abstract
This chapter analyses the editorials of two main Spanish newspapers, El PaĆs, (ideologically close to the Socialist Party); and Abc (more akin to the tenets of the Spanish conservatives) during the first weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic. By using the tools of discourse analysis and narratological analysis, the chapter shows that despite the parliamentary agreement that allowed the implementation of the anti-COVID extraordinary measures, the political and media milieu remained highly polarized, with crossed accusations of adopting populist positions that were endangering Spanish liberal democracy
