Abstract

There is a paucity of relevant literature on the impacts of and responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in Wales. This may be because proximity to England tends to lead to the de-emphasis of the unique history and profile of Wales. In discussing a pandemic which is, by nature, global in scale, yet intensely personal and close to home in its impact, it is important to parse out issues as they relate to people and communities in Wales.
The pandemic is increasingly referred to in the past tense, but it is important to
recognise that we are in its latest phase, having seen several surging variants across the UK. Many people with suppressed or compromised immune systems are still ‘shielding’ due to the heightened risks associated with contracting COVID-19 (Daniels, 2022) and we are all in various ways still dealing with the ongoing impacts of the pandemic (The British Academy, 2021). Therefore, we refer throughout to the pandemic in the present tense.
