About this release

This weekly release by Public Health Scotland presents data on COVID-19 across NHSScotland.

Main points

• In the week ending 21 March 2021, 3,371 individuals were recorded in the contact tracing software, from which 8,014 unique contacts have been traced.

• As at 21 March 2021, there have been 213,888 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 3,515 in the week ending 21 March.
• In the week ending 19 March, there were 185 admissions to hospital with a laboratory confirmed test of COVID-19.
• In the week ending 20 March there were 17 new admissions to Intensive Care Units (ICUs) for confirmed COVID-19 patients.
• In the week ending 21 March there were 3,964 people who arrived in Scotland from outside the UK, of which 3,069 were required to quarantine (of which 540 were quarantined in a hotel) and 2,635 were contacted by the National Contact Tracing Centre.
• In the week ending 18 March, 0.08% of key healthcare workers who were tested for COVID‑19 tested positive.
• In the week ending 21 March, there were active confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 36 out of 1048 care homes that returned data (1,066 care homes in total).
• Since 19 November 2020, there have been over 2.1 million (2,180,547) LFD tests carried out in Scotland, of which 3,213 were positive (0.1%).
• In the week ending 21 March, under the Community Testing Programme 11.2% of symptomatic and 2.9% of asymptomatic tests for COVID-19 were positive.
• In the week ending 14 March, there have been 76 cases of COVID-19 confirmed by PCR testing under the Schools LFD testing programme (71 staff, 5 pupils).

Background

Since the start of the outbreak, Public Health Scotland (PHS) has been working closely with the Scottish Government and health and care colleagues to support the surveillance and monitoring of COVID-19 amongst the population. There is a large amount of data being regularly published regarding COVID-19 (for example, Coronavirus in Scotland – Scottish Government and Deaths involving coronavirus in Scotland – National Records of Scotland). This report complements the range of existing data currently available.
