This weekly release by Public Health Scotland presents data on COVID-19 across NHS Scotland.

Revisions 6 October 2022

  • Revision to Main Point section of the report (page 6), due to a data coding error, This section was revised on 06 October 2022. Due to a data coding error, the Covid-19 vaccination data has now been corrected to include the Pfizer Bivalent vaccine which was rolled out at the end of September. The impact of this is that the overall total for Scotland should be 491,342 and not 414,819 as reported previously.
  • Revision to Flu and COVID-19 Winter 2022 Vaccination section of the report (page 25). This section and accompanying Flu and COVID-19 Vaccination Uptake in Scotland dashboard were revised on 06 October 2022. Due to a data coding error, the COVID-19 vaccination data has now been corrected to include the Pfizer Bivalent vaccine which was rolled out at the end of September. The impact of this is that the overall total for Scotland should be 491,342 and not 414,819 as reported previously. Please note that the previous weeks data in Table 1 and Table 2 have been revised accordingly.

Main Points

  • In Scotland, in the week ending 20 September 2022, the estimated number of people testing positive for COVID-19 was 117,100 (95% credible interval: 93,600 to 143,500), equating to 2.22% of the population, or around 1 in 45 people (Source: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey, UK - Office for National Statistics)
  • In the week ending 02 October 2022, there were on average 744 patients in hospital with COVID-19, a 12.0% increase from the previous week ending 25 September 2022 (664)
  • In the week ending 02 October 2022 there were 19 new admissions to Intensive Care Units (ICUs) with a laboratory confirmed test of COVID-19, an increase of 8 from the previous week (25 September 2022)
  • In the week ending 25 September 2022, there were 33 deaths involving COVID-19 (8 fewer than the previous week) (Source: National Records of Scotland)
  • By week ending 02 October 2022 of the 491,342 people vaccinated for COVID-19 as part of the Winter 2022 vaccination programme, 93.9% were vaccinated for Flu at the same vaccination appointment​

The response to the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have a wider impact on health and care as a result of the lockdown, economic pressures and changes to health services.

Background

Since the start of the outbreak, Public Health Scotland (PHS) has been working closely with the Scottish Government and health and care colleagues to support the surveillance and monitoring of COVID-19 amongst the population. There is a large amount of data being regularly published regarding COVID-19 (for example, Coronavirus in Scotland – Scottish Government (external website) and Deaths involving coronavirus in Scotland – National Records of Scotland (external website)). This report complements the range of existing data currently available.
