Following four years of invaluable leadership and guidance, the Chair of Public Health Scotland’s Board, Angiolina Foster, will come to the end of her term on 31 August 2025.

Angiolina has been fundamental to the establishment of Public Health Scotland (PHS), guiding the organisation through its initial years during a global pandemic, and more recently as the organisation has matured.

Chief Executive of PHS, Paul Johnston, said

“Public Health Scotland has benefitted immensely from Angiolina’s experience, knowledge, and leadership.

“Her vision and commitment to improving public services, shifting our systems of accountability to focus on preventing harm and promoting health, and tackling health inequalities has been vital.

“Angiolina’s strategic outlook, networks and dedication have supported colleagues across PHS.  She has worked closely with many partners, and through her work has made a difference to people’s lives in Scotland. I am deeply grateful for her dedication and contributions to the organisation.”

Reflecting on her time as Chair of the Board, Angiolina said:

“It has been and continues to be an honour to be the Chair of Public Health Scotland. Every day I am in awe of the work and contributions staff make to improve health in Scotland and their efforts to reduce inequalities.

“Over the last four years, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing vital milestones being achieved and significant developments in policy. We’ve seen life expectancy improve slightly, the reform of public services is to be centred around prevention and improving population health, we recently published a vaccination and immunisation framework for Scotland and our work with the Institute of Health Equity in Scotland is ground-breaking. However, there is still much work to do.

“There is now an opportunity for a new PHS Chair to build on the progress we have made and bring a renewed focus to improving population health, leading PHS to deliver its mission to promote, protect and prolong health and create a Scotland where everybody can thrive.”

The Scottish Government and COSLA have begun the recruitment process for a new Chair, with applications closing on 15 May 2025.
