Public Health Scotland (PHS) collects care home data from local authorities that fully or partially fund the care home place and care homes that submit information to the care inspectorate for the care home census. This includes care homes run by a variety of sectors including local authorities, private sector and the voluntary sector.

The two main data collections are:

  • Care home census. All adult care homes that are registered with the care Inspectorate are invited to take part in the Scottish care home census each year. The scope of the care home census includes self-funded and publicly funded residents.
  • Social care - care home dataset. Information on people whose social care needs are supported in a care home and the support is fully or partially funded by the local authority.

The data on care homes can be used by stakeholders. The stakeholders include:

  • Scottish Government
  • Local authorities
  • Private and voluntary service providers
  • Academics
  • General public.

The data is useful to:

  • Look at the scale of care home provision
  • Provide information on care home residents in Scotland
  • To help plan services for the future.
