The overall aim of CARI surveillance system is to monitor the burden and impact of acute respiratory infection in the community by place and time, in order to provide evidence for local and national public health interventions.
CARI ensures the early detection of the community transmission of respiratory pathogens.
By collecting information on patients at sentinel GP practices who test positive for respiratory pathogens (cases), we can identify high-risk groups and detect unusual events, such as outbreaks or clusters.
We have developed a protocol for CARI surveillance. The protocol is an iterative document, so please ensure you have the latest version.
Further information is available in the Scottish Government CMO letter dated 17 April 2023.
