About this release
This release by Public Health Scotland (PHS), in partnership with NHS National Services Scotland (NSS), provides information about NHSScotland payments to General Practices for the financial year 2023/24, including analysis of payments by NHS Board area.
Main points
In 2023/24 the sum of NHSScotland payments made to 898 General Practices was £1,068.3 million. Payments have increased by £55.3m (5.5%) when compared to 2022/23.
- £899.9m was paid to General Medical Services (GMS) contracted practices run by GPs;
- £120.4m was paid to locally negotiated contracted practices (17C) run by GPs; and
- £48.0m was paid to NHS Board run practices (2C).
Of the £1,068.3m paid in 2023/24, the Global Sum was the largest payment amounting to £771.5m paid to 898 General Practices.
In addition to the £1,068.3m, there was £21.8m paid to 83 General Practices for dispensing services in 2023/24.
Background
This annual release provides information on NHSScotland payments to General Practices for the financial year 2023/24. It does not provide information on General Practitioner earnings, which are published by NHS Digital every September.
Global Sum Payments are a contribution towards the contractor’s costs in delivering essential and additional services, including its staff costs.
A revised GMS contract came into effect from the 1 April 2018, introducing increases in funding designed to support a significant change in the delivery of General Medical Services (GMS). More information about the contract can be found on the Scottish Government website.
Data are sourced from NSS Practitioner Services General Practice Payment system. Data on dispensing payments are sourced from the Prescribing Information System (PIS).
