About this release

This release by Public Health Scotland (PHS), in partnership with NHS National Services Scotland (NSS), provides information about NHSScotland payments to General Practices for the financial year 2024/25, including analysis of payments by practice type and NHS Board area.

Main points

In 2024/25 the sum of NHSScotland payments made to 892 General Practices was £1,156.9 million. Payments have increased by £88.6m (8.3%) when compared to 2023/24. There are three types of practice which received the following payments:

  • £981.4m was paid to 746 General Medical Services (GMS) contracted practices run by GPs;
  • £127.9m was paid to 84 locally negotiated contracted practices (17C) run by GPs;
  • £47.6m was paid to 62 NHS Board run practices (2C).

Of the £1,156.9m paid in 2024/25, the Global Sum was the largest payment amounting to £836.5m paid to 892 General Practices. Global Sum Payments are a contribution towards the contractor’s costs in delivering essential and additional services, including its staff costs.

In addition to the £1,156.9m, an amount of £23.5m was paid to 82 General Practices for providing dispensing services in 2024/25. This includes reimbursement of medicines, appliances and fees paid to practices that provide dispensing services for their patients.

Background

This annual release provides information on NHSScotland payments to General Practices for the financial year 2024/25. It does not provide information on General Practitioner earnings, which are published by NHS Digital.

A revised General Medical Services (GMS) contract came into effect from the 1 April 2018, introducing increases in funding designed to support a significant change in the delivery of General Medical Services. More information about the contract can be found on the Scottish Government website.

Data are sourced from NSS Practitioner Services General Practice Payment system. Data on dispensing payments are sourced from the Prescribing Information System (PIS). More information relating to General Practice in Scotland can be found on the Public Health Scotland website.
