As part of respiratory surveillance in Scotland, a sentinel surveillance system for severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) in hospitals is being developed.
The overall aim of the SARI surveillance system is to monitor the burden and impact of acute respiratory infection in Scottish hospitals by person, place and time. The system also aims to characterise patients with SARI, in order to provide evidence for local and national public health planning and decision making.
SARI surveillance involves the monitoring of SARI admissions and the collection of data from SARI patients at a network of sentinel hospital sites.
We have developed a protocol for SARI surveillance to provide more detail about the methods that are used.
