National surveillance of tuberculosis provides information on the numbers, distribution and characteristics of cases, drug resistance patterns and treatment outcomes. It supports the early identification and treatment of cases and enables the identification of high-risk populations.
This summary report describes tuberculosis in Scotland for the year 2019. It includes treatment outcomes of cases first reported in 2018 (12 month outcomes).
In 2019, TB in Scotland decreased for a ninth consecutive year. This is a 12% decline in incidence from the previous year. TB in Scotland is now at the lowest levels since enhanced surveillance began in 2010, with an incidence of 4.4 cases per 100,000 population.
This remains well within the World Health Organization’s “End TB Strategy” target of less than 10 cases per 100,000 population. However, work continues to improve the detection and successful treatment of cases in Scotland.
