About this release
This weekly release by Public Health Scotland presents epidemiological information on respiratory infection activity, including COVID-19, across Scotland. Due to the dynamic nature of all datasets included in this report, figures contained within each update may be subject to change in future releases. Any revised figures will then be reflected within the latest update.
Main Points
Overall assessment 27 January 2025 to 2 February 2025 (ISO week 5):
- All syndromic indicators of circulating infectious respiratory conditions in the community continued to decrease in week 5, and GP attendances for influenza-like-illness, which had been at a higher activity level than the same time in previous seasons, have now returned to normal levels for this time of year.
- Laboratory-confirmed influenza case numbers have continued to decline overall, from a peak of 2,953 in week 52 to 470 in week 5. As overall influenza cases decrease, influenza B continues to increase in terms of absolute numbers and proportions at 173 (37%) in week 5 compared with 158 (27%) in the previous week. The increase is earlier than in previous seasons. Overall influenza-related hospital admissions in Scotland decreased by 33%, from 270 in week 4 to 181 in week 5, though with a small increase in influenza B admissions (from 47 to 52).
- All-cause excess mortality for week 2 (the latest week not impacted by reporting delays) remained at moderate levels overall and in 65-plus age group, possibly due to the peak in influenza-related hospital admissions also recorded in week 1 and week 2, and other non-respiratory-related causes including cold weather during that period.
- RSV continues to decline across all surveillance systems in the recent week. Emergency hospitalisations due to RSV decreased by 49%.
- COVID-19 signals remain low across all surveillance systems.
