Changes to the severity of COVID-19 and impact on hospitals in Scotland, January-April 2022

Abstract
An increasing proportion of individuals are being admitted to hospital or dying with concurrent SARS-CoV-2 infection, where the infection is not directly causing their admission or death. Some of the current statistical and epidemiological indicators for SARS-CoV-2 are no longer optimal for understanding the severity and impact of COVID-19 in Scotland and need to be reviewed. The epidemiology of COVID-19 changed following the emergence of the Omicron variant and it is important to understand the impact on morbidity, mortality and hospital admissions. Robust epidemiological evidence is necessary to inform decision making for future COVID-19 policy in Scotland.
