About this release
This release by Public Health Scotland (PHS) provides information on the number of GP practices in Scotland and the number of patients registered at these practices from 2013 to 2023.
Main points
As at 1 October 2023:
- The number of patients registered with GP practices continues to rise year on year and has increased by 7.1% since 2013.
- The number of patients aged 65 and over has increased by 19.3% since 2013.
- The number of practices in Scotland has decreased by 9.8% from 994 to 897 practices since 2013, reflecting a trend towards fewer practices overall and instead having larger practices.
Background
Information is presented on the number of patients registered with GP practices between 2013 and 2023, broken down at NHS Board and local authority level, by age group and practice type.
Please note that previous versions of this publication included data on the GP workforce, providing headcount figures. The responsibility of publishing this data has now been transferred to NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and was published on 12 December 2023, available on their website.
