An error has been noted in the vaccine preventable diseases summary table for 2022 measles data in this report. There was one case of measles in 2022. This error affects this table only. Correct data and figures were reported in the surveillance update for measles. All publications affected are in the process of being updated.

Vaccine-preventable disease

All vaccine-preventable diseases under surveillance in this report showed a notable reduction as a result of the social distancing measures and other restrictions implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of reported cases of all vaccine-preventable diseases in Scotland covered in this report remains low when compared to pre-pandemic times. 

Invasive bacterial diseases

Cumulative Invasive pneumococcal disease case numbers for 2022 were higher than the previous two years, with 374 cases in 2022, compared with 286 cases in 2021 and 274 cases in 2020. However, 2022 case numbers were lower than pre-pandemic case numbers which were 610 and 621 in 2018 and 2019, respectively.  

Cumulative meningococcal disease case numbers were higher than the previous year, at 29 cases in 2022 compared with 17 cases in 2021. Total case numbers in 2022 were lower than those in the three preceding years with 74 in 2018, 59 in 2019 and 33 in 2020.

Cumulative case numbers for invasive Haemophilus influenzae in 2022 were higher than those for the previous two years at 74 cases, compared with 51 cases in 2020 and 51 cases in 2021. However case numbers for 2022 were lower than in 2018 and 2019, at 82 and 83, respectively.

Measles, mumps and rubella

In 2022, there was one case of measles reported in first quarter of the year. This case was imported from outwith the UK and was the first case reported in Scotland since 2019

There were seven laboratory confirmed cases of mumps reported in 2022. In 2021 only one laboratory-confirmed case was reported.

No cases of rubella have been reported in Scotland since 2017.

Pertussis

Three cases of pertussis were reported in 2022. In 2021, four laboratory-confirmed cases were reported, a considerable decline from the 198 cases reported in 2020.
